Appraisal Take-in Instructions - General Steps

  1.  Clean items
  2. Inspect for loose/missing gemstones
  3. Photograph each item 3 angles, inside stampings, etc. ( see examples and more info below )
  4. Photograph any old appraisal, Independent lab report, receipt
  5. Record item information on the take- in sheet.
  6. Have the client fill out the client take-in form- make sure the purpose of the appraisal is checked

Evaluating an  Item

  1. Identify all gemstones - Natural, lab grown,  etc...
  2. Weigh entire item - grams or pennyweights
  3. Count and measure (in millimeters)  all gemstones. Length x width x depth ( estimate where needed )
  4. Note any lab report numbers on the main diamond girdle
  5. Note any stamps- karat, hallmarks - inner shank, on clasps, back of pendants, earring backs
  6. Note color and clarity of diamonds
  7. Colored stones- Give general  clarity ( 10 power clean , lightly, moderately, heavily included)​
  8. Measure lengths of bracelets pendants, chains and widths of rings at the shoulders and shank base

Photographing Items

  1. Use a white background ( Plain sheet of copy paper works well)
  2. Overhead lamp
  3. No flash
  4. Close up ​ as possible - leave some  space around items (  I will crop & edit  the photos )
